Sacramento authorities are examining a shooting that erupted late Saturday at Howe Park in Sacramento just as law enforcement were shutting down an unsanctioned gathering of a crowd of several hundred.
What Led to the Shooting
Deputies initially responded to Howe Park at about 6:30 Saturday evening after learning of individuals possibly carrying concealed weapons. After that, a follow-up call was made concerning a reported physical confrontation unfolding near the park.
Aerial units conducted an aerial sweep but found nothing to substantiate the fight report. Even so, authorities discovered that a massive group had come together at the location without permission.
The Shooting Itself
Responding units began the process of clearing the park by positioning themselves around the crowd and issuing commands over loudspeakers ordering the crowd to disperse at once. Around 15 minutes were allotted for the gathering to break up.
As the crowd was being cleared that upwards of 20 gunshots cut through the air. The sudden gunfire sent hundreds fleeing. Deputies swiftly started searching Howe Community Park shooting 2026 for victims.
Four Gunshot Victims
By the time the scene was secured, four individuals were located with gunshot injuries. The four individuals — comprising three men and one woman ranging in age through their in their twenties — were rushed to hospitals in the Sacramento area. Medical personnel stated that two of the four had injuries classified as immediate, one had moderate injuries, and one person's injuries were considered minor. Thankfully, each of the four victims was stable.
Sacramento Metro Fire arrived on scene and helped care for the four victims prior to hospital transport.
Physical Evidence
The center of the incident was determined to have taken place on Cottage Way alongside the Home Depot store at the 2200 Howe Avenue block. Crime scene investigators discovered additional spent rounds on Cottage Way. Bullet damage were identified in the wrought iron fence alongside the nearby Home Depot. This ballistic evidence suggested that at least one of the shooters had been shooting in a southerly direction from the Cottage Way area aimed at the Home Depot building and parking lot. The Home Depot was put under lockdown for a period of time. Crime scene technicians and detectives remained on scene well into the night.
